Backwater Valve Requirements
To be in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code, properties with basements or plumbing below the elevation of the next upstream manhole must be protected from sewage backflow by an approved backwater valve (see diagram). Should a sewer blockage occur, the backwater valve will prevent sewage from backing up into the property. For multiple-story buildings, the sewer line serving the upper floors must connect to the main sewer downstream of the backwater device.
NOTE: It is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain the backwater valve after installation.
