OCT. 31, 2024 – “Lead” is a scary word where drinking water is concerned, but Water Authority customers should not be afraid when they receive lead-related communications from the utility in coming weeks.
“The emails and bill inserts that folks will receive in November contain information about the Water Authority’s efforts to identify any remaining lead service lines in the water system, so that those lines can be replaced,” said Water Authority Board Chair Eric C. Olivas. “Customers should be aware that all drinking water produced by the Water Authority is lead-free. There is the remote possibility of lead exposure through contact with lead service lines, and that’s what we’re addressing through this process.”
The service line is the pipe running from the main in the street and past the meter to the customer’s home or business (see diagram below). Water Authority staff say they expect to find few if any lead service lines, given the local system’s history. Nevertheless, a comprehensive inventory of pipe material is required for all water systems under new rules from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPA also requires utilities to communicate with customers about the inventory process and its results.
“The information we’re sending to customers in November will include links to an interactive website where they can find out the material of the service line to their property, and what steps they need to take if lead components have been identified,” Olivas said.
