Welcome to the Rio Rally!
This page will be updated during the game, and the Leader Board will be active, too!
The Rio Rally is a city-wide game to celebrate and preserve our favorite, (and only!) river!
Play the Rio Rally! Collect stickers, as you go on quests around our city!
Besides earning a point for a quest, you can earn points if you take a city bus, walk or ride a bike to your quest, and drink tap water from a reusable water bottle! It takes less water when you conserve anything, because water is involved in the production of everything!
You can make stickers into a gameboard, or put them on a metal water bottle and use a magnetic player token to move it a sticker space each time you drink up all the good water from your water bottle! Yes, our tap water is so good we keep winning the President’s Award for Superior finished water quality, and more!
The Rio Rally will be played June 20th through July 12th, 2026. Get started by going to any city library, the Botanic Garden, or the Zoo, the NM Natural History Museum, Explora, and The National Atomic Museum, and the Wheels Museum!
Bring your Rio Rally Explorer’s patch to the Zoo and the Botanical Garden (one time for each group of 4) during the game for a discounted rate of $3.00 per person!, Then collect your sticker from the Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Aquarium!
Top game point collectors of the Rio Rally will receive rebates from the Water Authority, a family pass to the Natural History Museum, and other prizes! Most importantly, just by playing you may help create community, and act on ways to help our river!
How the game is played:
You and your team walk into any of the Rio Rally participating destinations. If it is the Zoo, Aquarium or Botanic Gardens, you show your Explorer’s patch to get in at a discount, – but the city libraries are free (as always!).
Just being at any of the destinations with your team is awesome, because you have awesome team mates, and the destinations are awesome! But, there is something new in this place…
As your team explores your destination, you discover the posters for the Rio Rally! Wooohooo! One poster is simply to register if you haven’t already, and the other is to log your discovery, and get the secret passphrase! Scan the QR code at the destination to find out what that is, and learn a fact about a bosque animal, or the place you are at, or both! Now that you know the secret passphrase, what do you do with that, you wonder. Walk up to the check-out attendant, or ticket person,- someone nearby who works with the facility,- and say you know the secret passphrase! Then, say it to them in a hushed tone, as to not spoil it for other potential players of the Rio Rally. The person will get you to the right place or, they themselves may be the keeper of the merit-badge sticker. What will they do? Hand a sticker to you and each of your team members who is collecting the stickers! For free!!!!!
Then you can collect the stickers in an album. Another idea is to collect them on your metal water bottle. I made a clay and grass porcupine on a magnet to move each time I empty the water bottle.
Here is a gameboard where a thimble, a marker cap, and a glue cap are player pieces in a quest to land on as many spaces as they can before they get to the end, and try to walk through as together as possible. You can use your stickers to make your own game!
Whatever imaginative use you have for them will be great! But you don’t have to collect the stickers if they aren’t something you would use, you can just play for fun, which is the best kind of thing to collect.
You can get your Rio Rally Explorer’s patch, and register even before the game begins!
Scan this QR Code or click here there to register! (Just don’t forget you did!)
